Short answer: published New Zealand price guides in 2026 put an app anywhere from about $5,000 for a small first version to more than $200,000 for a full platform. That spread is not noise. The guides are pricing different things, and knowing which one you are buying is the whole game.

What the published NZ prices say

Two NZ guides updated this year show how far apart quotes can be. Both are in NZD.

GuideWhat they call itPrice (NZD)
Product In Your Pocket (Feb 2026)Most MVPs$5,000 to $15,000
Product In Your Pocket (Feb 2026)Most production apps$10,000 to $30,000
Orchid (2026)Focused tool, 2 to 4 months$30,000 to $80,000
Orchid (2026)Full product, 4 to 8 months$80,000 to $200,000
Orchid (2026)Platform or enterprise, 8+ months$200,000+

Why quotes are so far apart

  • Scope. "An app" can mean three screens and a login, or a two-sided marketplace with payments, messaging and an admin portal.
  • What is included. Some prices cover the build only. Others include discovery, design, the backend, testing, store release and support.
  • Who builds it. A senior NZ team, a solo freelancer and an offshore team price the same brief very differently, and carry different risk.
  • How it is built. One codebase for iOS and Android, managed cloud services and AI-assisted development all cut hours compared with building everything twice from scratch.

The features that move the price most

  • iOS, Android or both. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter or React Native ship both from one codebase.
  • Accounts and roles: who can see and change what, enforced on the server.
  • Payments and billing, including subscriptions and refunds.
  • Integrations with systems you already run: accounting, CRM, booking.
  • Real-time features: maps, chat, live updates, notifications.
  • An admin dashboard for your own team.
  • Compliance: identity verification, privacy obligations, audit trails.

What you pay after launch

  • Apple Developer Program: US$99 a year to publish on the App Store.
  • Google Play: a one-time US$25 registration fee.
  • Hosting and services such as databases, sign-in, maps and email. These start small and grow with your users.
  • Maintenance. iOS and Android release new versions every year, and apps need updates to keep working and stay secure.

How to keep the cost down

  • Build the smallest version that proves the idea, then add features people actually ask for.
  • Use one codebase for both platforms unless the app genuinely needs native code.
  • Lean on managed services for sign-in, payments and hosting instead of building your own.
  • Agree the scope in writing before the build starts, so the price does not drift.

How we price at Blank Software

We scope every project with you first, then send a written proposal with what is being built, the price and the payment schedule. Work only starts once you have agreed it. We build our own apps on the same stack, so we can tell you early which features are worth their cost and which can wait.
