FlatMatch is live: what we built and how

FlatMatch is live at flatmatch.app. It is our own product: a New Zealand rental platform that matches renters to the flatmates as well as the place, and gives landlords and property managers a working portal behind it.

What it does

• Take a room in an existing flat and get matched to the people you would live with, not just the listing.
• Or rent a whole property the ordinary way, on your own or with the people you are moving in with.
• A match score you can audit: five stated answers, weighted. No black box.
• For landlords and property managers, one applicant list across every property, with six roles enforced on the server.
• Free for renters.

What is under the hood

• A web app and an iOS and Android app built with React Native and Expo, sharing one TypeScript package for types, validation and business rules.
• A Python FastAPI backend on Google Cloud Run, with PostgreSQL on Cloud SQL.
• Firebase for sign-in, with Google and Apple sign-in on mobile.
• Identity verification through a specialist partner, so renters and landlords know who they are dealing with.
• Billing for landlord and property manager accounts through Stripe.

How we tested it

Before launch the platform carried more than 3,500 automated tests across the web app, the shared code and the backend. Every change runs them, alongside a secret scanner that stops keys from ever reaching the repository.
